Coronavirus: Death toll rises as virus spreads to every Chinese region

The death toll of the coronavirus has risen to 170 and with a confirmed case in Tibet, the virus has now spread to every region in mainland China.
Chinese health authorities have said there were 7,711 confirmed cases in the country as of 29 January.
Infections have also spread to at least 16 other countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) will meet on Thursday to discuss whether the virus constitutes a global health emergency.
"In the last few days the progress of the virus, especially in some countries, especially human-to-human transmission, worries us," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday, pointing to Germany, Vietnam and Japan.
"Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak."
While there is no specific cure or vaccine for the virus, many people who contract it have only mild symptoms and do recover from it.
It can though cause severe acute respiratory infection and lead to death.
Like the similar Sars and influenza viruses, the new coronavirus is thought to be particularly a risk for elderly and people with pre-existing illnesses.
So far, most reported infections and deaths are in China's Hubei province and its capital Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak.

The city has effectively been sealed off and China has put numerous transport restrictions in place to curb the spread of the virus.
People who have been in Hubei Province are also being told by their employers to work from home until it is considered safe for them to return.

International evacuations from Wuhan

Meanwhile, the evacuations of hundreds of foreign nationals from Wuhan to their respective countries has begun.
Two flights to Japan have already landed at Tokyo's Haneda airport and the passengers are being screened at medical institutions. So far, three have tested positive for the virus, Japanese media report.
Around 200 US citizens have also been flown out of Wuhan and are being screened in the US.
Flights to take British and South Korean citizens out of Wuhan have both been delayed after relevant permissions from Chinese authorities did not come through.
According to the UK government, the arriving passengers are to be put in "supported isolation" for 14 days with "all necessary medical attention".
Australia plans to quarantine its evacuees on Christmas island, 2,000km (1,200 miles) from the mainland.
Two aircraft are due to fly EU citizens home with 250 French nationals leaving on the first flight.
Canada, the Philippines and Malaysia have also announced plans to fly their citizens out of Wuhan.

The New York Times has verified security camera footage Tuesday that shows, for the first time, that two missiles hit Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 on Jan. 8. The missiles were launched from an Iranian military site around 8 miles from the plane.
The new video fills a gap about why the plane’s transponder stopped working, seconds before it was hit by a second missile.
An earlier Times analysis confirmed what Iran later admitted: that an Iranian missile did strike the plane. The Times also established that the transponder stopped working before that missile hit the plane. The new video appears to confirm that an initial strike disabled the transponder, before the second strike, also seen in the video, around 23 seconds later.
Neither strike downed the plane immediately. The new video shows the airliner on fire, circling back toward Tehran’s international airport. Minutes later it exploded and crashed down, narrowly missing the village of Khalaj Abad.
The Times has confirmed that the new video was filmed by a camera on the roof of a building near the village of Bidkaneh, 4 miles from an Iranian military site. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s airspace unit, said that missiles were launched from a base near there.
Iran’s military blamed human error for the strike, and said the plane had been misidentified as a cruise missile flying over Tehran. But the plane’s flight path would suggest otherwise. It was climbing at around 2,000 feet per minute on its ascent from the airport when the first missile was fired, according to a Times analysis of flight data.

Flight activity from Tehran’s international airport was normal on the morning of Jan. 8, the flight data showed, and Flight 752 followed its regular route. It was one of 19 planes that took off from Tehran in the hours after Iran launched missiles at military bases in Iraq housing U.S. troops.
The new video was uploaded to YouTube by an Iranian user around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
The date visible on the footage is “2019-10-17,” not Jan. 8, the day the plane was downed. We believe this is because the camera system is using a Persian calendar, not a Gregorian one. Jan. 8 converts to the 18th of Dey, the 10th month in the Persian calendar. Digitally that would display as 2019-10-18 in the video. One theory is that the discrepancy of one day can be explained by a difference between Persian and Gregorian leap years or months.

100 Babies Die At Single Hospital In Rajasthan's Kota In A Month: 10 Points

100 babies died at the JK Lon Hospital in Rajasthan's Kota in December.
Kota, Rajasthan: Addressing the death of 100 newborns at a state-run hospital in the town of Kota in Rajasthan, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today said the alarming statistic is in fact an improvement over what the previous BJP government had recorded at the same hospital. Congress president Sonia Gandhi today discussed the tragedy with Avinash Pandey, who is the chief of the Rajasthan Congress. He reported that Mrs Gandhi is "upset" and "wanted to know the reason of the deaths".

Here are the top 10 updates on this big story:

  1. The state government in its report admitted that some of the incubators at the hospital used for newborns were not in proper working condition.
  2. The committee, led by secretary medical education and senior doctors who visited the hospital on December 27 to investigate the matter, also pointed out that the extreme cold has made it tougher for babies, already fighting for their life, to survive their illnesses.
  3. All the babies who died were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. Most of the children were brought to the hospital in a critical condition, said Vaibhav Galeria, the Secretary of  Medical Education, who headed the three-member team.
  4. The hospital in Kota is about 250 kms from the state capital of Jaipur. Chief Minister Gehlot today tweeted: "Govt cites figures to say child casualties in JK Lon Hospital in Kota have reduced to 963 this year from 1260 in 2015 and 1193 in 2016 when the state was ruled by BJP. In 2018, 1005 children lost their lives here".
  5. On December 27, the team led by the state's Medical Education Secretary. found lapses in the incubation unit of the neonatal unit. The units were not working properly, and the hospital placed two infants into one incubator due to the shortage.
  6. "We are saddened by this, our responsibility is to give clinical support, several children were brought with critical ailments. BJP can audit if they want, we saved all the children who were in condition to be saved," Rajasthan Health Minister Raghu Sharma said.
  7. "The children have not died because of a single factor. The extreme cold weather is also perhaps an added reason for the sudden spike in deaths as extreme weather affects neo-natals adversely, especially those who are low birth weight," read the report of the three-member committee appointed by the Chief Minister.
  8. The Congress government is under attack over the Kota tragedy from political opponents like Yogi Adityanath and Mayawati
  9. Assuring all support to the state, Union health minister Harshvardhan said the Centre is sending a high-level team that would include experts from AIIMS Jodhpur. "It will reach #Kota tomorrow," he tweeted. He, however, said the number of deaths is "definitely higher this time compared to last few years".
  10. Chief Minister Gehlot tweeted: "I telephoned Central Health Minister @drharshvardhan ji and requested him to visit #Kota personally so that he can see the best of facilities and proper management by State Health Department and get himself apprised of the facts."
